What to expect at a Quaker Meeting
This page sets out the basics of what to expect at a Quaker Meeting for worship.
Quaker worship is mostly silent and lasts about an hour. Anyone is welcome to attend – you don’t need to be a Quaker, and you don’t need to believe anything in particular.
We meet every week at these times.
- Sunday: 11:00-12:00
- Wednesday: 18:15-19:00
- 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month: 13:00-13:30
Newcomers are always welcome at all meetings.
How the meeting will play out
When you arrive
Someone will usually greet you at the door and show you into the meeting room. You can arrive quietly, sit anywhere you like, and settle in. No seats are reserved and there is no special place at the front.
During worship
The meeting is mostly silent. People sit together in quiet, giving space to reflect, pray, or simply be still. From time to time, someone may stand and speak if they feel moved to do so. We call this spoken ministry. There is no sermon, no ritual, and no expectation that anyone will speak – most people don’t. You are welcome to sit quietly for the whole meeting, or to stand and speak if you feel moved.
At the end
After about an hour, the meeting ends when people shake hands with those nearby. An elder will stand and greet the meeting, and then invite any newcomers or visitors to introduce themselves. This is not mandatory.
There may be a few notices. If there has been a children’s meeting that day we will hear what they learned. Then it is over!
After
We always have tea and coffee after meetings. There are usually also biscuits. On the first Sunday of the month we also have soup, and usually homemade sourdough baked by some very talented Friends. Sometimes we will have additional events, like talks, Christmas Carols, or bring and share lunches! These are usually communicated in advance through our notices.
A few things people often ask
- Do I need to prepare anything? No. Just come as you are.
- What should I wear? Whatever you’re comfortable in.
- Can I come just once? Yes, there’s no expectation to return.
- Is it religious? Some people experience the silence as spiritual or prayerful; others don’t. All are welcome.
If you’re unsure about anything – accessibility, online options, or what will happen when you arrive – please feel free to get in touch with our clerks at clerks@westminsterquakers.org.uk. We’re very happy to help.
